Solar Energy and Solar Panels FAQs

One of the most common things we hear at Green Solar Systems is that people are intimidated by the idea of solar power. It has existed as a concept for decades, however, the recent boom in commercial and residential use has sparked America’s curiosity!

It seems expensive, is it? Can you use it on cloudy days? How do they work? If these questions are bouncing around in your head, you just might be surprised at the answers!

How do solar panels work?

Without going into too much boring detail, solar panels are built of many small cells made of silicon mixed with a range of different substances to create what is called a photovoltaic cell. Photovoltaic just means it turns sunlight into electricity! These are then hooked into your existing electrical system and voila: you’re running your home on star power!

How much maintenance do solar panels require?

Very little! Our installer can recommend an exact cleaning schedule depending on environmental factors around you, but most panels don’t require more than an occasional shine-up! Tilted-roof installations are self-cleaning in the rain to some degree. You should still have your installer check panels annually for early detection of any issues.

Do solar panels work well in PA?

Yes, Pennsylvania has more sunshine than Germany, the world leader in solar power.

How much of a reduction in my power bill can I expect?

There is no easy answer to this question. It really depends on how much energy you use, what kind of array you install, and where you live. It depends on questions such as: “How do you heat your home or business?” “How do you heat your water?”  “Is your home all electric, or do you have other utilities such as gas that supplement your electric bill?”

As a professional solar installer, Green Solar Systems can take the answers to these questions into account and advise you as to the possible savings available for you.

How much does a solar installation cost?

A mid-size residential array costs about $15,000 to $30,000 installed. This is dependent on a number of factors. Large commercial applications will obviously be more expensive.

What’s the difference between photovoltaic (PV) and solar hot water panels?

PV panels generate electricity, solar hot water panels do exactly what they sound like – they heat water for sinks, showers, dishwashers, and more.

Should I find a solar professional to install my panels?

Though some choose to undertake a solar panel installation on their own, we don’t recommend it. You should always at least consult with a professional first. The solar energy experts at Green Solar Systems can help you plan, build, and maintain your solar energy project.
